About N-FibreBase

Natural Fiber Reinforced Plastics show quite interesting properties, but until today have not become established in the industry. The reason is missing information about this class of materials. Decision makers do not find data about Natural Fiber Reinforced Plastics that match the plastics industries´ standards.

To overcome this problem the project “Material Database for Design and Calculation of Components made from Natural Fiber Reinforced Materials” was started, funded by Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection via FNR.

During the project several databases were established, covering natural fibers, natural fiber compounds and application cases.

These databases have been published on the internet and have been consulted by thousands of engineers for several years. However, the original plan was to present natural fiber reinforced plastics in relevant media equally and directly comparable with conventional plastics and to avoid any classification of being exotic materials.

For this reason the collected information has now been transferred into the well known plastics information systems of M-Base. During this step, the data was filtered in a way that only commercially available grades have been kept. All R&D materials and compounds produced on lab size only, as well as materials with doubtful information, delivered by the producers, got deleted.

Data about commercially available NF-Compounds and application examples are now available via

www.materialdatacenter.com

A database for natural fibers is being prepared and will be available at the same site soon.

In other projects M-Base is continuously working on the improvement of the information infrastructure for biomaterials, like the development of design rules, computational simulation of biomaterials and the development of simple tools for the life cycle evaluation of plastics.
